Nebraska roughs up A&T
LINCOLN, NEB. ? Scoring more than 100 points will do a lot for a team’s confidence.
That was Nebraska guard Marcus Walker’s assessment Monday after the Cornhuskers rolled over North Carolina A&T, 107-57.
“It was exciting,” Walker said. “Coming off the Creighton loss (70-44 on Dec. 11), it’s all about getting better. With a win like that, everybody can get confidence. Hopefully, we can take that confidence and build on it.”
Nebraska (8-2) scored 100 points for the first time since losing to Oklahoma, 117-100, in January 1996.
Nebraska’s 58 first-half points were the most points it has scored in a half since scoring 60 against Texas A&M in February 2001.
A&T (0-7) lost its 35th consecutive nonconference road game to remain winless.
Nebraska opened up its early lead on a barrage of three-pointers, including two from McCray, two from Marcus Walker and one from Wes Wilkinson. That made the score 18-4 with 14:53 remaining in the first half.
Jason Dourisseau’s dunk capped a second Nebraska spurt to put the Huskers up 52-27 with 2:09 left in the half.
Nebraska hit 59 percent of its shots in the first half and forced 10 Aggie turnovers that were turned into 16 Husker points.
“I thought our guys got off to a good start and our shooting was really good,” said Nebraska coach Barry Collier. “We had a bunch of guys make threes. I thought we took care of the ball well and got after the boards effectively. But the shooting was the story.”
The Huskers opened the second half with another flurry, outscoring the Aggies, 17-3, in the first five minutes of the half to lead 75-35 with 14:51 left.
Nebraska ended the game shooting 51 percent from the field and 44 percent from the three-point line, where it hit 16 of 36 attempts.
“They just shot the lights out, that’s the bottom line,” A&T coach Jerry Eaves said. “From their Creighton game, it was a night-and-day difference. There was nothing we could do.”
