Stephen Munzer, Salina senior majoring in English and philosophy at Kansas University, was one of the two Kansas finalists in the Rhodes Scholarship competition. The other was David Parker of Kansas State University.

Burton Marvin, former dean of the Kansas University journalism school, returned early from an assignment in Tel Aviv, Israel, and planned to teach again. He had been directing a mass communications program for the state of Israel. Marvin had been succeeded as KU dean by Warren Agee. Marvin later was at Syracuse University.
