Old home town – 40 years ago today
The new Anchor Savings and Loan structure at Ninth and Ohio was to be started soon but no opening date had been announced.
The sports world was still abuzz about Chicago Bear football halfback Gale Sayers from Kansas University. He already had scored 21 touchdowns in his rookie season, breaking the old NFL season record of 20 by former Cleveland Brown all-star Jim Brown. By season’s end, Sayers wound up with a record 22 touchdown after scoring only 20 in his three seasons at Kansas. Sayers recently had registered six touchdowns in a single game against San Francisco.
The state deer season closed and the kill rate turned out to be far lower than expected. Eight checkpoint stations in this region showed a total of only 91. Officials had expected twice that because of the large number of deer that had been sighted by game wardens and reported by citizens of the region.
