Judge sentences mom to drug treatment program

A judge sentenced a 31-year-old mother of three to inpatient drug treatment Thursday for possession of methamphetamine.

“This court knows that you’re a good person that had an addiction problem,” District Court Judge Michael Malone told defendant Mary D. Reed.

Reed was arrested in May after a drug raid at her residence in the 4000 block of Overland Drive, and her three children were taken into protective custody. Charges of child endangerment and possessing drug paraphernalia were dropped after a plea agreement.

Malone ordered Reed to 18 months of drug treatment, with an underlying 13-month prison sentence if she violates probation.

The status of Reed’s children wasn’t mentioned in court, but she told Malone she’d been able to visit them once in recent weeks.

The children’s 24-year-old nanny initially was charged as a co-defendant, but charges against her were dropped in September.
