Kyle and Jill Kreighbaum, Lawrence, announce the birth of a daughter, Elle Rory Kreighbaum, born Nov. 23, 2005, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. ¢ Bill and Allison Brown, Olathe, announce the birth of a daughter, Kolby Kathleen Brown, born Dec. 9, 2005, at Olathe Medical Center. Her sisters are Kylee Brown, 4, and Kalista Brown, 21 months. Maternal grandparents are Don and Mary Beary, Lenexa. Paternal grandparents are Bob and Sharon Brown, Lawrence. Great-grandmother is Catherine Beary, Albia, Iowa.

¢ Jerry and Dena Sampel, Riverside, Calif., announce the birth of a son, Alan Thomas Sampel, born Nov. 27, 2005, at Riverside Community Hospital in Riverside, Calif. Maternal grandparents are Alan and Sharon Wang, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Nancy and Gerald O. Sampel, Linn Valley. Great-grandparents are Mary Rose Robb, Tonganoxie; S.S. Wang, Taipei, Taiwan; Elva Sampel, Kansas City, Kan.; and Roberta Shelton, Linn Valley.

¢ Brandon Sublette, Lawrence, is among Harding University students selected for inclusion in the 2006 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Sublette is a senior majoring in public relations. Nominees were chosen on the basis of academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.

¢ The following Oskaloosa High School students were selected as Students of the Month for November: Jimmy Harding, freshman; Myla Heston and Dillon Robbins, sophomores; and Kate Glanville, senior. The were honored for their positive contributions to the school and community.

¢ Jacob Esau, Lawrence, made the dean’s list for the fall quarter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, Ind., by earning at least a 3.3 grade-point average. He is a freshman majoring in computer engineering.

¢ Tianna Dunnaway, 14, was crowned Miss Junior Teen Kansas City 2005 in the Nationals Inc. pageant. She won a 1,000 savings bond, trophy and trip to Florida to compete in the All cities pageant this weekend. Tianna lives in Lawrence and attends Eudora High School.

¢ Emporia State University recently announced fall 2005 graduation candidates from the area. Those who earned a bachelor’s degree are: Amy Behrends, Jason Bott, Stephanie Brecheisen, Jack Gunselman, Joshua Heller, Justin Knight, James Oakes, Fernando Rodriguez and Laurie Shelton, Lawrence; Teresa Baker, Lyndsay Doonan, Michael Engel, Tera Hylton, Christopher Skiles and Heather Stratton, Ottawa; Amelia Hinkle, De Soto; Kellie Stebbins, Overbrook; and Jill Peters, Lecompton.

Those who received a master’s degree are: Donalyn Biehler, Baldwin; and Scott Brown, Carolyn Clark, Rebecca James, Chad Jira, David Reber and Sarah Shik, Lawrence; Sharon Beems, Richard Brown and Elizabeth Reeder, Ottawa.

¢ Tiffany Erb, Lawrence, and Laura Martinez, Topeka, have earned bachelor’s degrees in nursing from Washburn University during the fall 2005 semester.

Erb is married to Matthew Erb, of Lawrence. She is the daughter of Bradley and Star Caywood, of Topeka. Martinez is married to James Sampson, of Topeka. She is the daughter of Perry and Joyce Perkins, of Lawrence.

¢ The first Cordley School Chess Tournament, which was Dec. 10 at the Kansas Union on the Kansas University campus, was attended by 175 scholastic chess players, representing 48 different schools.

Southwest Junior High School won a second-place team trophy in the K-12 Division and a third-place team trophy in the K-8 Division. South Junior High School finished second in the K-8 Division. Wakarusa Valley School also won second in K-6 Division and third in K-3 Division, while Quail Run School was third in K-6.

Free State High School’s Benjamin Greenberg won an individual first-place trophy in K-12, and Central Junior High School’s Roy Wedge finished second in K-8. Wakarusa Valley’s Darren Rawlings placed fourth in K-6, and Robert Newman placed third in K-3.

Other Lawrence medal winners in K-12 were: Peter Lesslie, SWJHS, fifth; Thomas Reams, SWJHS, sixth; Thomas Clark, SWJHS, ninth; and Bryce Baringer, FSHS, 17th.

Winners in K-8 were: Nate McFadden, SJHS, seventh; Jessica Newman, SJHS, 10th; Douglas Rawlings, SJHS, 11th; Sonal Chakrasali, SWJHS, 12th; Patrick Carttar, SWJHS, 16th; and Jake Mather, SWJHS, 18th.

Medal winners in K-6 were: Cole Reams, Quail Run, sixth; Luke Lesslie, Quail Run, eighth; Lucas Suchy, Wakarusa Valley, ninth; Katie Conard, Quail Run, 10th; Cal Young, Wakarusa Valley, 12th; Kaustubh Nimkar, Sunflower, 13th; and Garrick Clapp, Quail Run, 17th.

In K-3, the winners were: Roscoe Bradt, Cordley, ninth; Alex Cateforis, Cordley, 10th; Wynn Feddema, Quail Run, 12th; Apramay Mishra, Sunflower, 13th; Sam Stephens, Cordley, 14th; Makayla Wagner, Wakarusa Valley, 15th; and Nick Gottschamer, Wakarusa Valley, 17th.

¢ Nicole Bellinder, Lawrence, graduated from Coffeyville Community College on Dec. 10 with an associate’s degree. Bellinder also was listed on the fall 2005 dean’s honor roll by earning at least a 3.4 grade-point average.

¢ Chris Bellinder, a Luther College senior of Lawrence, served as a chairperson of Phonathon 2005, which raised $663,003.

During the “Constructing Our Future” Phonathon, an annual fundraising event, student volunteers called alumni, visited with them about Luther and its needs, updated information and asked support for the annual fund.

Bellinder, a 2002 graduate of Free State High School, is the son of David and Sonya Bellinder, Lawrence.

As a Phonathon chairperson, Bellinder recruited nine calling captains, assisted in caller orientation and training, participated in committee meetings and calling nights and assisted with publicity.

¢ The following ED-TEC Culinary Arts students recently earned national certification in ServSafe, the nation’s leading food safety and sanitation education program: Jim Adams, Steven Calderwood, Tim DeArmond, Cody Hickock, LaDuska Johnson, Alvie Lavery, Nick Tillman and James Zeh, Eudora High School; Cameron Bennett and Paul Marks, De Soto High School; Anthony Cannon, Terry Martin, Ricky Davis and Lucas Ross, Lawrence High School.

The ServSafe certificate also articulates one unit of post-secondary credit from schools with hospitality-related programs. The certificate is valid for five years and is the benchmark used by the industry.

¢ Millicent Ables, a student at Kansas University School of Nursing, is the recipient of a scholarship from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Ables, of Lawrence, is a former officer in the U.S. Public Health Service. While an active duty officer, she received a Public Health Service citation for exceptional nursing care and an award from the Indian Health Service for outstanding delivery of care to Native Americans.

¢ Ian Adkins, Lawrence, is a member of the Valparaiso University Chamber Concert Band this year. He plays alto saxophone and is a sophomore music education major. Adkins, a 2004 graduate of Free State High School, is the son of Perry and Kaye Adkins, Lawrence.

¢ Gene Cosby, De Soto High School student, and Eddie Reed, Lawrence High School student, each received second-place honors during the ninth annual High School Visual Arts Competition on Dec. 1 in Merriam. Cosby placed in the 3D category with “Textured Face,” a sculpture. Reed placed in the computer generated art category with “Melting Self.”
