Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 16, 1905: “Marvin Hertzler, who was accidentally shot in the heel by a companion while hunting, has died from lockjaw. The wound originally was not considered serious, but Martin, an exceedingly bright boy, suffered badly prior to his death after apparent infection struck and disabled him. : One of the professors in the engineering department at the university has rigged up a device by which the fire in his gas stove is started every morning by an alarm clock. It has drawn, understandably, a lot of attention. The device has not been patented, so details are withheld. The prospects for such a device, if effectively produced, seem to be limitless and a patent should be expedited.”
