Clouds moving in today, then snow on Saturday

Lawrence will have clear skies today, with some clouds rolling in this afternoon. But Saturday’s forecast shows the city should get ready for some accumulating snow, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We are expecting several inches of accumulation by the time it’s done late Saturday evening,” Schack said. The National Weather Service is expecting three to six inches of snow for areas south of Interstate 70.

This morning, Lawrence will have clear skies, Schack said.

“We’ll have a lot of sunshine in the forecast. We are expecting to stay dry to begin the day and then just a few clouds for the afternoon,” Schack said.

At 7:30 a.m., the temperature was 26 degrees, the humidity was 68 percent and winds were from the west at 10 mph. The windchill factor was 16 degrees.

Schack said winds today will be from the west at 10 to 15 mph, with temperatures rising to only the upper 30s by late afternoon. The high today will be 38 degrees. The average high for this date is 42 degrees and the average low is 24 degrees.

Saturday’s morning low will be 19, with Saturday’s high climbing to 28 degrees. Winds will be from the east at 5 to 10 mph.

Cloudy skies are expected all day Saturday, Schack said. The snow will begin in southwestern Kansas early in the day and move toward the northeast, bringing several inches to the Lawrence area, she said.

“By the late morning we will have flurries. Moderate bands of snow are expected through the evening,” Schack said.

Snow will continue until early Sunday morning. Sunday’s morning low temperature will be 21degrees and Sunday’s afternoon high will be 27 degrees, she said.
