Riley a hit in return to bench

Shaq scores 30 as Heat turn back Bulls, 100-97

? Pat Riley insists he’s a changed man, even if his return to coaching had a decidedly familiar feel.

He whistled to get his players’ attention. He stalked the sideline in a designer jacket and slacks. His hair was slicked back. And, yes, his team won with an All-Star center leading the way.

Riley’s second tenure as Miami Heat coach got off to a successful start Tuesday night, with a 100-97 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

“Yes, I liked this win,” Riley said. “If we had lost, I’d have gone and retired.”

The team president stepped back into his old job Monday, when Stan Van Gundy resigned. He saw a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter dwindle to two, then watched a three-pointer by Chicago’s Luol Deng clang off the rim as time expired.

“You coach on instinct,” Riley said. “It’s going to take some time for me to get real comfortable with all the things you have to do at the end of the game. It’s going to take me time to get up to speed on everything.”

Shaquille O’Neal scored a game-high 30 points in his first start and second game back for Miami since spraining his right ankle – an injury that knocked him out of 18 games. Dwyane Wade and Antoine Walker scored 14 apiece.

Kirk Hinrich led the Bulls with 26 points, and Darius Songaila added 19.

Wizards 94, Nets 74

Washington – Washington broke a three-game losing streak without ailing All-Star Gilbert Arenas. Chucky Atkins ran the offense with Arenas nursing a sore back, and Jarvis Hayes scored 19 points to lead a balanced attack for the Wizards. The Wizards, who have had trouble blowing big leads, never trailed as they won their final game before starting a five-game, West Coast road trip.

Hawks 100, Cavaliers 94

Cleveland – Al Harrigton scored 20 points, and Tyronn Lue had a season-high 19 as Atlanta won just its second road game. Joe Johnson added 18 for the Hawks, who came in an NBA-worst 3-16 overall and only 1-10 outside Atlanta, but followed up their victory Saturday over the defending champion San Antonio Spurs with another victory.

Spurs 95, Clippers 87, OT

San Antonio – Tim Duncan hit two free throws with 12 seconds left to send the game into overtime and then led the Spurs past Los Angeles. The Spurs climbed back from deficits as large as eight against the Pacific Division’s leader, outscoring the Clippers 11-3 in overtime.

Denver 101, Charlotte 85

Charlotte, N.C. – Carmelo Anthony scored a career-high 42 points, and Denver handed Charlotte its eighth straight defeat. With Michael Jordan in attendance, Anthony had his second 40-point game in less than a week. He also reached that mark in a victory over Miami on Friday. Emeka Okafor had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Bobcats, who haven’t won since Nov. 26 against Washington.

Warriors 110, SuperSonics 107, OT

Seattle – Baron Davis made a pull-up three-pointer with less than a second left in overtime, and Golden State broke its first losing streak of the season. Davis took the inbound pass from Mike Dunleavy near midcourt, then stopped and drained the 26-footer over Seattle’s Ronald Murray. Davis previously had missed a difficult shot in the lane at the end of regulation, sending the game to overtime.

Kings 93, Timberwolves 91

Minneapolis – Bonzi Wells hit a three-pointer from the corner as time expired to lift Sacramento over Minnesota. Wells appeared to hand the Timberwolves their sixth victory in seven games when he missed one of two free throws with 28 seconds left, leaving the deficit at 91-89.
