Best, worst nursing homes listed

December 14, 2005

Kansas Advocates for Better Care has compiled its annual lists of the state's best and poorest performing nursing homes.

The rankings are based on information gleaned from three years of state reports.

The better homes are defined as those cited for five or fewer deficiencies in each of their three most recent inspections. Poor performing homes are those cited for 10 or more deficiencies.

The rating system isn't perfect, said KABC director Deanne Bacco, noting that on occasion, excellent or lousy homes can fall off the lists.

Lake View Manor, 3015 W. 31st St., is one of the state's most penalized nursing homes. But it's not on the list, Bacco said, because it scored fewer than 10 deficiencies on a 2003 inspection.

Conversely, Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan is consistently one of state's best nursing homes. It's not on the list because in January it was cited for mistreatment.

Any home cited for mistreatment is dropped from the list, Bacco said.

"We've drawn this line in the sand and said 'Here are the criteria we're going to use,'" Bacco said. "We're trying to be consistent. You should be able to look at the lists and be able to see which have been consistently good facilities and which have not."

Out the state's roughly 375 nursing homes, 33 made the list of good homes; 51 made the list of poor performers.

None of Lawrence's four nursing homes made either list, though Lake View Manor was fined $7,000 last month after inspectors confirmed reports of abuse, and Brandon Woods had zero deficiencies on its most recent survey.

No Lawrence care facilities make either list

The nursing home where my mom works is on the good list. That's funny, since they treat their workers like crap in order to convince the inspectors that they do a good job. Sick days are a thing of the past at this nursing home.

Sandpiper Bay is a horrible facility. Maybe they should let employees rate the homes since they have to (actually) work there and deal with CRAP for eight hours a day. Those poor poor poor residents family should visit very often especially after peak visiting hours. The staff are screwing around with each other and cant focus on the residents. Their setting up dates on the clock for God sakes!!
