Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 10, 1905: “The Carnival of Nations which the ladies of the Episcopal Church held in Eldridge Hall was one of the greatest successes of the year. The idea was a unique one. Every race from the dusky Indian to the pretty Dutch girls with their wooden shoes was represented, and well-represented at that. The booths were well-arranged and tastefully decorated with a decidedly pleasing effect. The thatched college, the German castle and the New England kitchen were especially deserving of praise. Many learned much about friends and neighbors. … The Young Men’s Christian Assn. was opened to membership at 9 this morning and by noon nearly 60 had enrolled. There was quite a gathering to see the swimming pool in the new building filled for the first time and this is an exceptional addition to the community. Many have inspected the building : “
