National Guard unit returns from Iraq today

Members of the Kansas National Guard’s 891st Engineering Battalion will return from their year in Iraq today. A 2 p.m. welcoming ceremony will be held at Fort Sill, Okla., for the first group of arrivals.

A second ceremony will be held Sunday for the second wave of returning soldiers.

Lt. Col. Lee Tafanelli, the battalion commander, is a former Republican state legislator from Ozawkie. The unit is based in southeast Kansas, but includes some northeast Kansas personnel – including Staff Sgt. Rod Moyer, principal at Eudora West School.
