Snow keeping city in a deep freeze

Still covered with six to eight inches of snow, Lawrence became the coldest spot in Kansas this morning, bottoming out with a minus 23 degree windchill factor.

“After a bitterly cold start to our day, we are going to see warmer temperatures,” said Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist. Today’s high will reach 22 degrees, Reith said.

At 8:30 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was minus 13 degrees, with a 74 percent humidity and winds from the east at 3 mph, creating the windchill factor of minus 23 degrees. The average morning low temperature for this date is 24 degrees and the high is 43 degrees.

“It was minus 15 degrees earlier this morning out at the airport,” Reith said. The cold temperatures are caused partly by the snow on the ground, he said.

Reith said Saturday morning won’t be quite so cold. The temperature will drop to 12 degrees by early Saturday morning.

“Tomorrow, as some warmer air comes in, we should approach the freezing mark and melt off some of that snow,” Reith said. Saturday’s high will be 31 degrees.

Sunday’s morning low will be 17 degrees, with the high reaching 40 degrees Sunday afternoon.
