Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 9, 1905: “Why are prices so high? Everything seems to have advanced beyond all reason. Few can live on small salaries anymore. : The First Baptist Church was once built for $30,000. It was large and well-built but now members are raising another $15,000 to improve conditions. Its membership of 400, its 40 or 50 members at Haskell and more than 200 Baptist students at the university need a larger and better-equipped building, which the members are attempting to provide. Forty years of wind and weather have taken their toll.”
