KDHE confirms 4th West Nile case in county
State health officials announced on Thursday the fourth human case of West Nile virus in Douglas County this year.
A 40-year-old from the county was recorded as a probable human case in late October, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The state refused to release additional details about the individual, citing patient confidentiality.
Besides the Douglas County case, the KDHE on Thursday announced nine other probable human cases and one confirmed human case in Kearny County. The new cases occurred between late September and early November.
Earlier this year, health officials reported three human cases in Douglas County: a probable case of a 61-year-old and a confirmed case of an 82-year-old, both in August, and a 51-year-old man in June, who was declared the state’s and nation’s first human case in 2005.
The state finished West Nile virus season with 22 human cases. The KDHE reported in October that a person older than 75 years old from southwest Kansas died from the virus.
