Old home town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 8, 1905: “Never before in Lawrence have the public schools been in such an excellent condition as they are now. With a total enrollment of 2,318, the seven buildings now in service are crowded to the utmost and are being put to maximum use. Lawrence has twice the enrollment of the average town this size and the 55 teachers, 12 of whom are at the high school, are rated as excellent. : There is a mad dog scare in West Lawrence. Between three and four weeks ago, a strange dog went through that neighborhood and bit a number of people. The animal was of the St. Bernard species and it is reported that one other dog in the area has been showing hydrophobia signs. A close watch is in order for everyone in the region.”
