Blue Devils take care of Penn in Texas tuneup

? J.J. Redick scored 24 points, and Shelden Williams added 20 as No. 1 Duke prepared for its matchup with No. 2 Texas by beating Penn, 72-59, on Wednesday night.

Sean Dockery had 11 points for the Blue Devils (8-0), who travel to East Rutherford, N.J., Saturday to meet the Longhorns (8-0). Freshman Josh McRoberts had eight points, seven rebounds, four steals and two blocks for Duke.

Redick passed Trajan Langdon, Art Heyman and Shane Battier and moved into ninth place on Duke’s career scoring list. He made at least three shots from beyond the arc for the 70th time in his career.

Ibrahim Jaaber had 10 of his 16 points in the second half for the Quakers (3-3), who were playing on the road for the first time following five home games. They couldn’t overcome 26 turnovers despite outrebounding Duke 34-27.

No. 21 Maryland 87, W. Carolina 57

College Park, Md. – Travis Garrison had a career-high 23 points and 14 rebounds for Maryland.

Ekene Ibekwe scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half, and D.J. Strawberry added 13 points for the Terrapins (6-2), who led by only four at halftime.

Nik Caner-Medley grabbed 10 rebounds to become the 26th player in Maryland history to reach 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

Jared Outing led Western Carolina (5-6) with 12 points, and Antonio Russell scored 11.

Maryland played without leading scorer Chris McCray, who injured his left ankle during the George Washington game. He was replaced in the starting lineup by Mike Jones, who scored six points.

Notre Dame 78, No. 22 Alabama 71

Tuscaloosa, Ala. – Colin Falls scored 24 points, and Notre Dame went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line over the final three minutes.

Falls hit six three-pointers in the first half as the Fighting Irish (3-2) built a 17-point lead and then held on to snap a two-game losing streak.

The Crimson Tide (4-2) opened the second half with a 22-9 run to erase most of the deficit and cut it to one point on Ronald Steele’s three-pointer with 8:43 left. Falls hit his only three-pointer of the second half to push the lead back to five points a minute later.

Chuck Davis had a career-high 29 points for Alabama on 13-of-18 shooting.

No. 23 North Carolina 75, Saint Louis 63

Chapel Hill, N.C. – Freshman Tyler Hansbrough scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half to lead North Carolina.

David Noel had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Tar Heels (5-1), who followed their weekend upset of Kentucky by holding off the pesky Billikens in the first matchup between the programs since 1959. Reyshawn Terry added 14 points.

Anthony Drejaj had 16 points to lead Saint Louis (3-3).

North Carolina erased a 34-31 halftime deficit with a 13-0 run. Saint Louis answered with an 11-point run to take a brief lead, but the Tar Heels went ahead to stay on Terry’s reverse layup that made it 46-45 with 13:11 left.

No. 17 Nevada 78, UC Davis 51

Reno, Nev. – Marcelus Kemp scored 19 points, including 10 straight late in the game, and Mo Charlo added 12 to lead Nevada past UC Davis.

Nick Fazekas and Demarshay Johnson each had 10 points for Nevada (6-0), which shot 58 percent from the field and is off to its best start since the 1951-52 team opened 14-0.

Kyle Brucculeri scored 16 points, and Phil Rasmussen had 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Aggies (1-5), who upset Stanford last week but shot only 33 percent from the field against Nevada. Lyndale Burleson and Kyle Shiloh each had five assists for the Wolf Pack while playing in place of starting point guard Ramon Sessions, who sat out with a hip injury but is expected to return Saturday against No. 16 UCLA in the Wooden Classic at Anaheim, Calif.
