Lawrence Police are investigating the reported rape of an 18-year-old Topeka woman by two men early Sunday morning in downtown Lawrence.

The woman told police she'd been at Last Call, 729 N.H., and that when she went out to her vehicle between 1:46 a.m. and 2 a.m., two men she didn't know approached her and raped her in a parking lot in the 800 block of New Hampshire Street.

No witnesses reported seeing the incident. Police were dispatched to a convenience store after a clerk saw the woman was upset and called police.

Anyone with information is asked to call the department at 841-7210 or the Crime Stoppers hot line at 843-TIPS.

The Last Call keep the Lawrence Police Dept. way too busy. It's time for the powers that be to consider shutting this place down.

I agree, that place is always on the police blotter.

They also cause car wrecks tying to park in Borders.

I hope they catch these guys, and I hope Paula Martin doesn't preside over the case.

I took a citizen's class with the Lawrence Police Department, and they pretty much target Last Call because it is a large gathering of minorities. Maybe we should shut down the white cowboy bar (a.k.a. coyote's) since this type of stuff happens there, too. There are idiots fighting every weekend after listening to country music. Don't think that rap music is to blame for this. I agree that there are gang members from Topeke/Wyandotte who show up at Last Call. If that were a reason to shut it down, then there would be several other bars to shut down in Lawrence. It is terrible that this happened to a woman who should be free to walk outside and not worry about this stuff. Maybe we should focus on harsher punishment for these guys as a way to decrease the rapes, rather than wanting to rid the town of large minority gatherings.

Don't be so quick to call racism. The police should and do focus on the places that draw big crowds of jerks, whatever their color or status, meat markets like Coyotes's The Ranch, AND Last Call. Surely there are places where "minorities" gather that aren't a problem.

The problem is both the Last Call and Coyotes are owned byt he same people. And in the this class you took at the police department, did they specifically say they targeted the Last Call becasue they were "minorities".

My question is does the Last call have these sort of problems on "Alternative" night or "retro" night.

I would poll any of the Mil Spec guys who do security for these bars in town and see what they have to say is the common denominator. I talked to a couple who work AllStars and Last Call and the said the fights dropped when they stopped playing hip hop at AllStars. They are working from a direct comparison.

The cowboy bars have similar issues.

I've seen fights at other bars, but Last Call is the only place I've seen over 20 people in the street brawling. And more than once. I'm back and forth on this issue. I'd like to see Last Call shut down personally, but from a business stand point, it wouldn't be fair to shut it down because of random acts of idiots. What should be interesting is how having those high priced condos across the street will effect the future of Last Call. Would you spend a quarter of a million if you had to deal with possibly have a safety issue outside your living quarters? All rapists should be castrated. Would you take a chance raping someone if you knew you'd get your Johnson cut off? This poor girl will be traumatized the rest of her life.

The thing is the same crowd moves from bar to the next. This type of crowd used to be at Langston's (Two shootings and multiple fights at that one while it was open), then the Granada, then Los Amigo's (Then Club 508), then Tremor's (Which is currently Last Call)... If you follow the news report's of the different bar's and the fights at each there is a trend.

You know why the cops don't target The Ranch. Its because on Saturday night most of the people in there are cops or firefighters. And yes I do think the type of music has something to do with it, look at Rum Runners in Merriam. The nights that the people were shot was on open mic rap night. Now you can't tell me that at Coyote's or the Ranch after a night of country music that all the bumkins go out to there trucks, grab a shotgun and start blowing away people. The point of this article is not fights its the fact that a young lady was raped.
