Bruins’ preseason experience shows in win

The second- and third-grade Hoopster regular season tipped off Nov 30. Although neither team won the Hoopster preseason tournament, both teams gained valuable experience.

That experience paid off for the Bruins as they defeated the Blue Devils 29-22 at the East Lawrence Recreation Center.

This game was all about Scotty Frantz, Bruins forward and point guard. Frantz scored a game-high 17 points, but his point total doesn’t give an accurate depiction of how dominant he really played.

Frantz used his height to perfection by dominating the offensive and defensive glass. He was a rebounding machine and pulled down more than 10 boards throughout the game in addition to his scoring.

The Blue Devils kept Frantz in check during the first half of the game. Both teams managed to score only four points apiece during the first quarter. The offense picked up in the second quarter, but the Bruins scored 12 points to the Blue Devils’ 10, which gave the Bruins a 10-point lead at the break.

During one stretch of the game Frantz was unstoppable on offense. He scored on four consecutive plays to help the Bruins build a bigger lead.

After three quarters of play the Bruins had jumped out to a 13-point lead. They managed to hold the Blue Devils scoreless during the third quarter to lead 27-14.

Bruins guard Trey Pechal helped Frantz on the offensive side of the ball. Every time the Blue Devils knocked the ball out of bounds on the Bruins side of the court, Pechal would shout out orders from the baseline to set up an offensive scoring opportunity.

The Blue Devils tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, and they were somewhat successful. They gained six points on the Bruins but ran out of time and came up seven points short in the loss.
