Break out the warm gloves, coats and hats – an arctic blast will keep Lawrence in a deep freeze again today.

“It’s a very cold start, with a few flurries for the morning,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “Make sure you bundle up. . . . It doesn’t get much better today.”

At 8 a.m., the temperature was 14 degrees, the humidity was 73 percent and winds were from the northwest at 13 mph, making the windchill zero degrees. The average high for this date is 45 degrees and the average low is 28 degrees. The record for this date is minus 4 degrees, set in 1950.

Schack said the Kansas River just north of downtown had light snow on its frozen surface this morning. Lawrence got a quick dusting of snow overnight, with some light flurries still lingering.

Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy today, with the high temperature reaching only about 20 degrees today, with northerly winds 10 to 15 mph, Schack said.

“We could have the windchill in the single digits or 10 or 12 degrees this afternoon,” she said.

Overnight, the temperature will fall off to 6 degrees by early Wednesday morning, with 8- to 12-mph winds making the windchill between minus 5 and minus 10 degrees, Schack said.

Wednesday’s high temperature will be 16 degrees, with northerly winds 8 to 12 mph. Lawrence could get some measurable snow Wednesday, she said.

“We are expecting light accumulations Wednesday evening,” Schack said. Most of the accumulations will be to the south of Lawrence. The snowfall was expected to begin about 3 p.m. Wednesday, lasting through midnight, she said.

On Thursday morning, the temperature will start out at a low of 6 degrees, with windchills minus 5 to minus 10, and climb to a high of 17 degrees by Thursday afternoon, under cloudy skies.

Lawrence will crack out of the deep freeze on the weekend, when temperatures climb to the upper 30s on Saturday.

“It looks like a heat wave. We make it up to 43 on Sunday,” Schack said.
