Nowitzki’s 35 power Dallas

Former KU star Hinrich roughed up in Bulls' loss

? Darrell Armstrong raced back to block a fast-break layup late in the third quarter. Teammates hustled for loose balls.

And with all that going on, Dirk Nowitzki did what he is supposed to do.

He tied his season high with 35 points as the Dallas Mavericks held off the Chicago Bulls, 102-94, Monday night.

“We all know you just can’t have energy and play well for 82 games,” Nowitzki said. “All the good teams have letdowns.”

There was none Monday for Nowitzki, who followed his 30-point game in Saturday’s victory over New Orleans by hitting 14 of 28 shots.

Devin Harris finished with 13 points, a career-high 10 assists and tied a career best with five steals. Marquis Daniels added 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Adrian Griffin – starting his second game at small forward for the injured Josh Howard after being signed last week – delivered 14 points and 12 rebounds.

“I’ve been struggling with my shot. Milwaukee was terrible, San Antonio did a really good job against me,” said Nowitzki, who was 5-for-22 against the Bucks and 3-for-13 against the Spurs. “We all know – with Josh out, with Jason (Terry) out now, with (Jerry Stackhouse) not seeing any action all season long – I’ve got to stay aggressive. I’ve got to make plays for myself and my teammates.”

Both teams lost starting guards to injuries.

Chicago Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich hangs his head as he is helped off the court after being injured. Hinrich was elbowed in the face and suffered a concussion against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday in Chicago.

Terry sat out the second half because of a sore right hamstring after missing all three of his shots and scoring two points and is questionable for today’s game at Indiana.

The Bulls lost Kirk Hinrich to a concussion and bruised jaw about three minutes into the game when he took an elbow to the face from a driving Nowitzki. Hinrich, who had rotated to the block, stayed down for several minutes before being helped to the locker room. A CT scan taken at Rush University Medical Center revealed no structural damage.

“We took him over to Rush and got a CT scan, which is normal, but he’s a little foggy upstairs,” Bulls trainer Fred Tedeschi said. “He was released. He’s at home tonight, and we will re-evaluate him (today).”

They also will re-evaluate Luol Deng, who lost a tooth after being elbowed by Nowitzki while going for a rebound with about three minutes left in the game.

Spurs 110, Magic 85

Orlando, Fla. – Tim Duncan had 26 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks, Tony Parker added 20 points, and San Antonio beat Orlando.

Duncan and Rasho Nesterovic frustrated Orlando’s Dwight Howard, who had a double-double by halftime but shot just 4-of-18 from the field. He finished with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Jameer Nelson scored 20 points, and DeShawn Stevenson had 15 points and seven rebounds for Orlando.

It was the fourth straight victory for the Spurs and fourth consecutive loss for the Magic.

Timberwolves 91, Jazz 77

Salt Lake City – Eddie Griffin had 14 points, 11 rebounds and a career-high eight blocks, and Wally Szczerbiak scored 26 points to lead Minnesota.

Kevin Garnett added 21 points and four assists as Minnesota won for the eighth time in 10 games, sweeping back-to-back games in Sacramento and Utah to improve to 10-6. The Wolves are 3-0 on a four-game road trip that wraps up Wednesday in Portland.

Minnesota closed the game with a 12-3 run, when Szczerbiak made two of his three three-pointers to end any hopes of a Jazz comeback.

Mehmet Okur led Utah with 14 points, and Matt Harpring had 10 rebounds. Jarron Collins scored 10 points, and Andrei Kirilenko had 10 points and four blocks.

Clippers 99, Heat 89

Los Angeles – Elton Brand scored a season-high 37 points and added 12 rebounds, and Los Angeles pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Miami in a matchup of division leaders.

Sam Cassell added 18 points and 13 assists for the Clippers, who have won two straight and remain atop the Pacific Division.

Dwyane Wade scored 29 points for the Heat, the Southeast Division leaders despite losing two in a row. Jason Williams and Alonzo Mourning each added 17 points.

Wade and Mourning, who had 12 rebounds, combined for all of Miami’s fourth-quarter points.
