Cowboys suffer landmark defeat

? Two nights after a milestone victory, Eddie Sutton’s Oklahoma State team suffered a landmark loss.

Clifton Lee scored 24 points to lead Northwestern State to a 68-64 win Monday night, giving the Cowboys (6-2) their first home nonconference loss in seven years.

Northwestern State (4-2) had lost to Oklahoma State six times in the past seven seasons, including a 91-53 blowout in last season’s opener.

“They are a good basketball team,” said Sutton, who Saturday moved into fifth-place on the all-time coaching wins list with his 787th victory. “I am not embarrassed to get beat by them. They beat Mississippi State on the road, and that is not an easy task. They should have beat Missouri.”

Jermaine Wallace added 15 points for Northwestern State, a Southland Conference school from Natchitoches, La.

Jamaal Brown was 5-for-9 from three-point range and led Oklahoma State with 18 points.

JamesOn Curry, the Cowboys lone returning starter from a team that went to the NCAA tournament’s round of 16 last season, did not score and fouled out with 1:10 to play. He had been averaging a team-high 13.3 points.

Manhattan — For a coach on the long end of a 29-point blowout, Jim Wooldridge didn’t look very happy. Trailing an underdog by nine points in the first half will do that.

“This was a very difficult ball game to get through,” Wooldridge said after Kansas State pulled away from a one-point halftime lead to beat Longwood (2-6). “I didn’t have our guys prepared to play in a way that made sense to me.”

Guard Lance Harris scored 19 of his career-high 26 points in the second half for the Wildcats (5-1), who outscored the Lancers 24-2 in the first 11 minutes of the second half.
