‘The Triangle’ plumbs the cosmic murk

The Sci Fi Channel invites viewers to spend the next three nights in “The Triangle” (8 p.m., Sci Fi) – the Bermuda Triangle. Filled with special effects and an impressive cast, “The Triangle” begins with three ships a-sailing. Could that be Christopher Columbus and the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria? But this isn’t a history lesson. The seafaring Spaniards get their post-medieval minds blown by the sight of a giant 21st-century super tanker that leaves them wobbling in its wake. What gives?

Fast-forward to the present, and a Greenpeace vessel helmed by Lou Diamond Phillips challenges a Japanese whaler. But their altercation takes a back seat to bubbles from the deep that quickly doom the whaler and its eco-friendly escort. Phillips’ character survives, but his mind is seriously scrambled from his time in The Triangle.

Concerned about the loss of his super tankers, a shadowy shipping tycoon (Sam Neill) assembles a crack team of experts (Eric Stoltz, Catherine Bell, Bruce Davison and Michael Rodgers) to plumb the depths of this oceanic mystery. He offers them a cool $5 million each to find his missing ships, and not one cent should they fail. Their quest gets murkier after a jetliner vanishes in the enigmatic triangle. But that’s just the beginning.

“Farscape” fans should pay attention. “Triangle” was written by Rockne S. O’Bannon, creator of that departed series as well as film and TV versions of “Alien Nation.”
