Snow flurries possible this afternoon

Lawrence is in for some teeth-chattering arctic weather this week, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“I don’t think we make it above the freezing mark until Saturday,” Schack said. There’s also a chance for snow flurries today and possibly the first accumulation of snow on Wednesday evening.

“This morning, we’ve bottomed out at 10 degrees,” Schack said. “It’s a very cold start this morning, although we don’t have a wind chill to factor in.”

At 8 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 11 degrees, the humidity was 84 percent and winds were calm.

“Today’s temperature tops out around 30,” Schack said. The average high for this date is 45 degrees and the average low is 29 degrees. The record low is 2 degrees, set in 1964. Winds today will be from the southwest at 5 to 8 mph.

“We’ll have a lot of sunshine to start off today,” Schack said. Then clouds thicken up in the afternoon, bringing the possibility of some light snow to the north of the area, she said.

“We could see a few flurries,” Schack said. An arctic front will continue to creep in through the Plains tonight, she said.

“There’s no relief tonight or tomorrow. It just gets colder,” Schack said.

Overnight, the temperature will drop to a low of 12 degrees by early Tuesday morning, with winds become calm, she said. Tuesday’s high will be 23 degrees, she said.

Wednesday’s morning low will be 6 degrees, with Wednesday’s high reaching only 18 degrees, she said.

There’s a chance for the first snow accumulation for the Lawrence area south of Interstate 70 on Wednesday evening into Thursday morning, Schack said.
