Temperatures thaw to upper 30s today

Light snow moving in Saturday afternoon, Sunday

Cold, wintry weather is expected to chill off Lawrence for the next few days – and even bring some light snow this weekend.

But temperatures will climb above the freezing mark today, said Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist.

“Enjoy 39 degrees today, because that’s about as warm as we get,” Reith said.

At 8 a.m., Lawrence’s temperature was 22 degrees, the humidity was 77 percent and winds were from the east at 9 mph, making the wind chill 12 degrees. The average high temperature for this date is 47 degrees and the average low is 30.

“It is very cold,” Reith said. Although today’s afternoon high temperature will reach 39 degrees, southeast winds 8 to 15 mph will make it seem colder. Skies will be partly cloudy through the day, Reith said.

Overnight, the temperature will drop to 23 degrees by early Saturday morning, he said. Then clouds will move in, bringing a chance for light rain, mixed with snow flurries during the afternoon and evening, Reith said.

“We’re not expecting any heavy accumulations,” he said. “If you’ve got plans to hang up some holiday decorations, make sure you bundle up.”

Saturday’s high will reach only 36 degrees.

Sunday will also bring a chance of light snow through the area, he said. Sunday’s morning low will be 24 degrees, with the high reaching 33 degrees by Sunday afternoon.

“Some very cold air is on the way,” Reith said. High temperatures Monday through Wednesday will climb only into the 20s, he said.
