Old home town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 1, 1905: “With all our boastfulness about education, there are 10 percent of our grown population who are illiterate. This is a bad showing and we should start at local levels to change it drastically. : A suit for $30,000 damage for slander was brought yesterday against Frank Strong, university chancellor, by Harrison S. Weeks, ex-football coach. Weeks, coach for the team in 1904, was discharged by Strong because of a report that Weeks says was circulated in the university and was derogatory to his moral character. Weeks failed to make good as coach and has since been sore because he was let out in favor of Dr. Bert Kennedy, who this year led the team to a 10-1 record. On the surface, the lawsuit seems ridiculous.”
