Soccer drops opener

? Seabury Academy’s volleyball squad began its season with a bang, winning two matches at a triangular Tuesday at Elwood High. The Seahawks beat Kansas School for the Deaf, 25-2, 25-12, then toppled Elwood, 20-25, 25-12, 25-17.

Seahawks coach Craig Friedrichsen was excited after a solid start to his third season at Seabury.

“We’re 2-0 for the first time since I’ve been here,” he said.

Senior Laura Hoffman had 13 aces and six assists for Seabury, and junior Molly Thurman and freshman Bria Phipps each added 10 kills.

“It was a really good night,” Friedrichsen said. “I think we have a lot of talented kids.”

Seabury will travel Tuesday to a quad at De Soto, then will play host Thursday to a triangular in its home opener.

Seahawk soccer falls

Kansas City, Mo. – Seabury opened its high school soccer season with a 3-0 loss to Platte County, Mo., Tuesday in the opening round of the Barstow Tournament.

“For our first game, it answered some questions,” Seabury coach Gunar Harmon said.

Harmon cited the play of Paul Bireta, Karel Hill and Philip Anderson.

Seabury will play a loser’s-bracket game in the tournament Thursday against a yet-to-be determined foe.
