Co-defendant pleads in sheriff’s death

? A man arrested in connection with the death of Greenwood County Sheriff Matt Samuels pleaded guilty Monday to drug and firearms charges.

Billy G. Nowell, 35, of Bronson, changed his plea to guilty to charges of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine and carrying a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, according to court records.

Three other charges were dropped, said Jim Cross, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Sentencing was set for Nov. 14 before U.S. District Judge Monti Belot.

Samuels was shot Jan. 19 while serving a search warrant on a suspected meth lab at a home in Greenwood County.

Scott Cheever, 23, of Virgil, was arrested after a seven-hour standoff, and officials said they found a suspected meth lab at the home. Federal prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Cheever, who has been charged with shooting Samuels and faces 13 counts in the case.
