Lawrence to escape remnants of Hurricane Katrina

Mostly sunny skies and temperatures headed up to 90 are in store today for the Lawrence area, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“Roll down your windows on the way out the door,” Schack said. On your drive to school or work this morning, you’ll find temperatures in the 60s, with partly cloudy skies, Schack said.

Schack said Lawrence won’t get any remnants of Hurricane Katrina, which will stay to the east and head up north through Mississippi, Tennesee, Kentucky and Ohio. Katrina was pelting New Orleans this morning with 145 mph winds as it was reaching the mainland (Latest hurricane forecast)

“It’s not heading in our direction. We’ll be safe in the Central Plains,” Schack said.

A thunderstorm brought 0.06 of an inch of rain Sunday night in Lawrence. But the clouds pushed off to the south and east and will bring mostly sunny skies today, she said.

At 7:45 a.m., the temperature was 64 degrees; humidity was 90 percent and winds were calm.

Temperatures will climb through the day to the upper 80s by late afternoon, with the high eventually hitting 90 degrees, Schack said.

Overnight, the temperature will fall to 62 by early Tuesday morning.

Tuesday’s high will be 90 under partly cloudy skies,

On Wednesday, Lawrence will stay dry with the morning low starting at 63 degrees. Temperatures will climb to a high of 88 degrees by Wednesday afternoon.

A front is expected to come through early Thursday morning, bringing the possibility of morning showers, Schack said.
