500 soldiers to be deployed to Iraq

The Kansas Adjutant General’s Department recently announced the deployment to Iraq of about 500 soldiers with the Kansas Army National Guard’s 2nd Battalion, 137th Infantry.

About 120 of the unit’s soldiers are in Company A, which is based in Lawrence. The battalion is based in Kansas City, Kan., with another unit in Wichita.

The public is invited to a deployment ceremony to honor the troops at 1 p.m. Sunday at Bramlage Coliseum at Kansas State University in Manhattan. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and the battalion’s commander, Lt. Col. James Trafton, will speak.

The battalion will leave for training after the ceremony and, when deployed to Iraq, will operate the Joint Visitor’s Bureau and provide security for high-level visitors to Iraq.
