Lawrence artist to unveil Kansas quarter tribute

The release of the Kansas state quarter will also be the occasion of the unveiling of a new earthwork by Lawrence crop artist Stan Herd.

The earthwork, a reproduction of the quarter design, is being completed in a field near Hutchinson and will be finished by Saturday. The coin itself will be released into circulation on Aug. 29.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius invited Herd to create the earthwork as part of the celebrations surrounding the quarter’s release.

“Kansans should be proud of this creative talent that moves our state forward,” Sebelius said. “We believe this is the first ever earthwork art to commemorate the release of a state’s quarter. Stan’s earthwork is a distinctive way to introduce the new Kansas quarter and to celebrate our state’s heritage.”

A poster-sized aerial photograph of the completed earthwork will be available for purchase at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson following the official ceremonies on Sept. 9 for the kick-off of the quarter.
