Kansas City, Mo. The Kansas City Royals are confident first-round draft pick Alex Gordon will not attend class today at Nebraska and cause the team to lose its rights to him.
"He has no intent of going to class," scouting director Deric Ladnier told the Associated Press on Sunday. "Negotiations will continue to go on like they have."
Ladnier said he had "a good conversation" Sunday with Casey Close, the agent for the slugging third baseman and two-time Big 12 Conference player of the year.
"We've negotiated in good faith to this point," Ladnier said. "We'll continue to do so."
Gordon, following his junior year, was the second player overall taken in the June draft. Negotiations, however, have stalled, and Gordon said last week he had enrolled at Nebraska for the coming fall term.
If he attends classes, which begin today, the Royals would lose their rights to him, and he would go back into the draft next June.
"At this point, he's got no intention of going to school," Ladnier said. "He enrolled in school as a contingency plan."
