Children’s Book Shop owner looks to sell

August 16, 2005

The owner of a college bookstore in Manhattan is getting out of the children's book business in Lawrence.

The Children's Book Shop, 937 Mass., is being offered for sale by John Levin, owner of the shop and Varney's Book Store in Aggievillle.

Levin intends to sell or close the Children's Book Shop in Lawrence by Oct. 1, said Sue Vance, manager of the Lawrence store since its opening eight years ago.

The approaching transition comes as The Toy Store is preparing to move in across the street, expanding into the former home of Everything but Ice at 936 Mass.

"We were actually thinking about doing some things in conjunction with them - our books and their toys. We could carry fewer toys and carry more teacher items," Vance said. "That's what we would like, but that's not what John has in mind."

Levin and other officials at Varney's in Manhattan did not return phone calls seeking comment Monday. Levin's other Children's Book Shop is inside Varney's in Manhattan.
