Ex-KU coach Timmons injured in truck accident

Local track legend in ICU at Topeka hospital

Former Kansas University track coach Bob Timmons suffered no apparent serious injuries in a truck accident Wednesday afternoon north of Lawrence.

However, Timmons was in the intensive care unit Thursday at Topeka’s Stormont-Vail Hospital.

“He’s conscious and is aware that he was in an accident, but he’s not quite himself yet,” wife Pat Timmons said.

According to Mrs. Timmons, her husband lost control of his pickup when he turned off Wellman Road onto a rural road that leads to Rim Rock Farm, site of numerous cross country meets, including the 1998 NCAA Championships.

Timmons’ truck went into a small culvert, and he had to be rescued by a Jefferson County road crew working in the area. Then, he was taken by ambulance to the Topeka hospital.

Mrs. Timmons said her husband was badly bruised and shaken up in the mishap.

Timmons, 80, was a highly successful track coach at Kansas University from 1966 to 1988. He guided the Jayhawks to numerous Big Eight Conference championships and a handful of NCAA titles.
