Another hot, sticky day in the upper 90s will probably keep many of us indoors today.

But if it's not too cloudy tonight, you might want to head out to a rural area and watch a big-time astronomical event the Perseid meteor shower, said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

"This is supposed to be the best meteor shower we have this year," Schack said.

Before the big event, Lawrence will have to deal with another hot day.

At 10:40 a.m., the temperature at Lawrence Municipal Airport was 86 degrees, the humidity was 55 percent and the heat index was 89 degrees.

"Today we have thinning clouds. It's another hot one. No break from the heat," Schack said. Today's high will reach 97 degrees in the late afternoon, she said.

"The heat index may head up to around 100 or so, but not anything excessive," Schack said. "I really don't think it's felt that bad for the last few days. It's about the same thing today. "

There will be some clouds lingering in the area tonight, she said.

"So it's not ideal for watching the meteor shower, but definitely worth going out and trying to catch some," Schack said. "The best situation is 50 or 60 an hour. You want to look in the eastern sky, late tonight towards tomorrow morning is the best time. . . . Right before dawn tomorrow morning would be the best time."

Light pollution from the city creates a problem seeing the shooting stars, Schack said.

"You definitely want to go out to rural areas," she said.

The meteors will be coming out of the constellation Perseus in the eastern sky and heading toward the horizon, she said.

"The Perseids are one of the faster types of meteors and one of the bright types," she said.

According to SpaceWeather.com, the meteor shower lasts from today through Saturday, but Friday morning is the best to see dozens to hundreds of meteors.

If you're out watching early on Friday morning, you'll find the temperature falling to a low of 73 degrees, she said.

Friday's high will ready 94 degrees under partly cloudy skies.

"Rains are approaching us tomorrow," she said. "We're still watching for the exact timing. Right now, we're thinking of evening into the overnight for our first chance for scattered storms. We'll have several chances throughout the weekend."

Saturday morning's low will fall to 73 degrees, with Saturday's high reaching 85, she said.

"It will be mostly cloudy for the entire weekend," she said. "Saturday, there will be a few scattered thunderstorms. Sunday more scattered storms."

Sunday's high temperature will reach only 80 degrees, as a cold front moves in, she said.
