K.C. kicker Tynes seeks consistency

? After an up-and-down rookie season, Lawrence Tynes is trying to find his stroke in the Kansas City Chiefs’ training camp.

So far, it’s not working as well as Kansas City would like.

Tynes, who last year beat out veteran Morten Andersen to win the Chiefs’ job, has struggled to make his field-goal attempts since camp opened. And while the team doesn’t have anyone in camp challenging for Tynes’ spot, kickers know a replacement is just a phone call away.

“He’s got to go out and do his job, because even though there’s nobody in here directly with him, there are a lot of kickers out there,” special teams coach Frank Gansz Jr. said. “There are a lot of kickers in camp (with other teams). He’s competing against the whole league.”

Tynes, the first Scottish-born player in the NFL, was cut in camp by Kansas City in 2001 and 2002. He played the 2002 and 2003 seasons in Canada before winning the Chiefs’ job last year.

He hit a 50-yard field goal in the opener against Denver and put together a nine-game string without a missed attempt. But he also missed a field goal and a point in a 22-16 loss to Jacksonville – and missed three of five field-goal attempts in the final two games.

“If you go back 10 years ago, if a guy was 75 percent that was a good season,” Gansz said. “Now, if you’re not in the 90th percentile, you’re going to be in the lower half of the league.”

Ravens

Running back Jamal Lewis had his first practice in pads following an offseason of legal turmoil. The 2003 NFL Offensive Player of the Year served four months in federal prison and two months in a halfway house after pleading guilty to using a cell phone to arrange a cocaine deal.

Dolphins

Junior Seau’s frustrating road back from injuries finally might be over. Seau was back on the Miami Dolphins’ practice field, apparently recovered from a calf injury that kept him sidelined for the first 21â2 weeks of training camp.

Browns

Less than three hours after arriving at Cleveland’s headquarters to apparently finalize his contract, No. 3 overall draft pick Braylon Edwards and his agent bolted after negotiations with the Browns broke down.

Jaguars

Cornerback David Richardson missed his second straight day of practice because of a right ankle sprain and is out indefinitely. Richardson, listed as the starter opposite Rashean Mathis, was on crutches and wearing a protective boot over his ankle. Richardson was injured Monday when he came down awkwardly on his ankle.

Bills

Tight end Kevin Everett, the Bills’ third-round draft pick, signed, although it’s not clear when the injured player will be cleared for practice. Everett has been rehabbing in Orchard Park, N.Y., since he had surgery in May to repair a torn left knee ligament he hurt during the team’s first day of minicamp.

Panthers

Carolina claimed second-year cornerback Dwight Anderson off waivers from the St. Louis Rams. The defensive back out of South Dakota played in 12 games last season. He was competing for the team’s nickel back spot during training camp before being released Monday for curfew violations.

Steelers

Pittsburgh linebacker Joey Porter will be out for five weeks because of a knee injury. The Steelers said Porter hyperextended his knee at practice Tuesday.
