The Pelathe District of the Heart of America Council Boy Scouts of America announces that its annual golf tournament fundraiser will be Aug. 22 at Alvamar Public Golf Course. After being sponsored by John Hadl for 15 years, the torch has been passed to Bill Self, and this year’s event is entitled the Bill Self Boy Scout Classic. The tournament is a four-player scramble event, beginning with registration at 12:30 p.m., and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The price is $150 per person. Individuals are welcome to register, and they will be placed on a team. Included in the $150 are green fees, golf carts, prizes and a barbecue dinner after the tournament. ¢ Laura Devlin, Carol Fittell, Arielle Laue-Minden, Emily McCarthy and Melissa Shinogee have earned the highest advancement award the Girl Scouts of America offers to scouts, the Gold Award.

They will receive the award at their Gold Award Ceremony on Wednesday at the Dole Institute of Politics. The members of Lawrence Senior Girl Scout Troop 654 are among about 2 percent of all Girl Scouts who attain the Gold Award.

Since joining the Older Girl Scout Program, these scouts have served as program aides and camp counselors, as well as earning an average of 25 Interest Patches.

Each candidate successfully completed the steps required for the Gold Award, including earning the Senior Challenge Pin, Career Pin, Leadership Pin and completing a community service project requiring at least 50 hours of individual planning and work. Their project was to design, plant and fence the landscape in front of the Salvation Army building.

The scouts are active members in the community and in their schools, where they will all be high school juniors.

¢ Boy Scout Troop 59, chartered to the First Presbyterian Church of Lawrence, recently attended a 10-day camping session at H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation near Osceola, Mo.

Fifty-one scouts, seven full-time adult leaders and 20 part-time adult leaders attended the session. The camp’s senior patrol leader was Joe Stogsdill and Audrey Taylor was camp scoutmaster. The scouts earned more than 160 merit badges. They participated in activities such as swimming, wall climbing, repelling, cave exploration, archery, rifle shooting and Tribe of Mic-O-Say ceremonies.

Ranjeet Ghorpade, Alex Kong, Scott Ragan, Adam Wangler and James Windholz advanced to the rank of First Class. Chase Low, Brady Murrish and Hunter Pierce advanced to Tenderfoot. Kevin Workman received his BSA Lifeguard certification. Nolan Frank, Ben Seybert and Adam Wangler earned the Mile Swim patch.

The Troop’s “under 5 foot tall” water polo team won the camp championship and the “over 5 foot tall” team took second place in its division.

In the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, an honorary camping organization at Camp Bartle, Chip Allen, Henry Chapman, John Frederickson, Jonathan Gabler, Eli Hodge, Derek Kappelman, Ryan Marienau, John Wagner, Derrick Weishaar and Eric Yowell, as well as Dom Reiske of Troop 52 who was attending camp with the troop, became Foxmen. John Corkins, Brock Norwood and Keagan Taylor were inducted into the tribe as Braves; John Bergman, Gordon Fry and Joe Stogsdill became Warriors. Nolan Kappelman and Kevin Workman earned the Firebuilder designation. Daniel Bergman, Nathan Desetti and Ryan King received the Tom-Tom Beater designation. Jordan Wright was Keeper of the Sacred Bundle. Zachary King, Zach Owen and Phil Wrigley became Shaman, the highest youth responsibility in the Tribe. Adult leaders Bob Corkins, Clay Kappelman and Greg Yowell were inducted as Honorary Warriors.

¢ Cub Scout Pack 3057, chartered to The Lawrence Catholic School, had a bowling event July 16 at Jaybowl in the Kansas Union. Scouts who attended were Andrew Bireta, Tegan Bowers, Justin Cross, Alex Waite, Ben Witte, Sam Witte, Thomas Bach, Jared Lange, Brandon Bunting, Noah Yoshida, Elias Schneck, Kyle Vogelsang, Luke Fitzgerald, Clayton Pfeifer, Jakob Walter, Phillip Commons, Adam Wagner, Simon Elwell, Jack Lange and John Abney.

Webelos from the Pack attended Camp Theodore Naish Scout Reservation on July 24-26. They included John Abney, Phillip Commons, Simon Elwell, Luke Fitzgerald, Thomas Peterson, Clayton Pfiefer, Monte Scott Turner II and Jakob Walter. They were accompanied by adult leaders Greg Elwell, Mike Fitzgerald, Kent Peterson, John Pfeifer, Monte Turner and Brian Walter.
