Mexico City Gunmen killed a Nuevo Laredo city council member and his bodyguard as they drove to work Friday, the latest attack on a high-ranking official in the increasingly lawless border city.
The killings brought the number of slayings in Nuevo Laredo this year to 108, most of them tied to drug trafficking.
Leopoldo "Polo" Ramos Trevino, president of the City Council's Public Security Commission, was ambushed by three gunmen as he and two bodyguards drove to city hall. He and one guard were killed instantly; the other guard was injured and taken to a hospital. The gunmen then sped away in a Nissan Altima, officers said.
The killings came just before U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza announced here that the U.S. consulate in Nuevo Laredo would reopen Monday, a week after it was shut down because of growing concerns about safety.
