Barbecue joint cooks up giant mural

Vermont Street BBQ owners are working to break records, although the records have nothing to do with their smoked turkey sandwiches and burnt ends.

The owners have asked friend and artist Chad Haas, above, to get his fingers dirty and paint a mural in the main dining room at 728 Mass. The mural covers a wall 65 feet long and 12 feet tall.

Haas and others hope to get the piece listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest finger-painted mural completed by one person.

“When I was young, I used to get in trouble for doing things like this,” Haas said, as he painted behind a large sheet hiding the mural from public view. “We forget what we learned as children. To use our fingers is a beautiful thing.”

The mural will be unveiled at 10 p.m. Saturday.
