¢ Cancer 5K Champs: Lawrence’s Jodie Smith, Rhonda Lavaldo and Karen Hyde, and Eudora’s Paul Heitzman were age-group winners in the Cancer Action 5K in Kansas City. Lawrence’s Dee Boeck and Tonganoxie’s Wally Brawner earned second places.

¢ SSG Soccer Titlists: Two Lawrence teams were soccer age-group champions in the Sunflower State Games. In 3-on-3, a team of Grace Lang, Kaley Tesdahl, Jordan Payne, Rachael Hodison, Sarah Schneider and Olivia Dykes won in the U-14 age group. In 6-on-6, a team of Maren Kahler, Olivia Hodison, Madeline Caywood, Annakate Kleibohmer, Abby Cassady, Chelsey Cassady, Ella Magerl, Hannah Rupprecht and Mary King won in the U-10 division.

¢ Smith Hole-in-One: Jim Smith used a five-iron to ace the 115-yard No. 15 hole Friday at Alvamar Golf Club. Witnesses were Jeff Neal and Richard Prince Jr.

¢ Golden Oldies: A Golden Oldies golf tournament for ages 60 and over will be Aug. 17 at Alvamar. Entry fee is $40 for the four-man scramble. For information, call Ted Coulter at 842-6876.

¢ Free State Meeting: Free State High’s fall sports parents meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 14 in the school auditorium. Afterward, parents and students are invited to a Booster Club-sponsored barbecue.

¢ Cooperstown Stars: Ty Hensley, Jake Johnson and Troy Willoughby of Lawrence and Josh Hoffman of Baldwin played for the Kansas City Stars in the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y. Made up of 12-year-olds from Kansas and Missouri, the Stars placed third out of 80 teams. Rod Sharp of Eudora and Mike Hensley of Lawrence were among the coaches.
