Brewers turn tables on Mets

Hall's homer, Overbay's two-run single give Brewers big victory over New York

? One night after blowing a lead, the Milwaukee Brewers handled the late innings perfectly.

Lyle Overbay singled home two runs in the ninth, and the Brewers rallied after Pedro Martinez left to beat the New York Mets, 6-4, Wednesday.

Bill Hall homered in the seventh to end Martinez’s most dominant stretch of the game, and Carlos Lee added a tying shot in the eighth for the Brewers, who couldn’t hold a four-run lead in Tuesday’s 11-inning loss but rallied against the Mets’ bullpen Wednesday.

With two outs in the ninth, Wes Helms reached on an infield single against Mets closer Braden Looper (4-5), and Brady Clark singled. Looper walked Rickie Weeks, loading the bases, before Overbay singled up the middle for a 6-4 lead.

“Those at-bats in the ninth inning when we had two outs were great,” Overbay said. “Perfect hopper in the little hole right there and he was safe at first with Wes, and Brady’s been doing that all year, and Rickie had that great at-bat. You don’t see three pretty good at-bats in a row.”

Rick Helling (1-0) worked the eighth for his first major-league win since Sept. 20, 2003, for Florida against Atlanta. Derrick Turnbow, who gave up Mike Cameron’s tying homer in the ninth Tuesday, bounced back to retire Carlos Beltran with runners at second and third for his 22nd save in 25 chances.

“I was glad I got the opportunity,” Turnbow said. “Any time you don’t pitch well you want to get back out there and compete and hopefully get the job done.”

Cliff Floyd and Mike Piazza homered for the Mets, who lost for the second time in nine home games.

David Wright had a two-run single but committed an error to start the ninth.

Pirates 9, Padres 8

Pittsburgh – Rookie Brad Eldred’s third consecutive double drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, and Pittsburgh overcame three San Diego homers.

The win was the Pirates’ second in eight games, while the Padres continued to struggle, losing for the 13th time in 15 games.

Rob Mackowiak walked in the ninth, and Eldred then hit a two-out line drive into the right-center field gap off Akinori Otsuka (1-4).

Jose Mesa (2-6) pitched the ninth for the victory.

Nationals 3, Dodgers 1

Washington – Preston Wilson and Nick Johnson homered, and Washington won for just the fifth time in 19 games since the All-Star break. The Dodgers lost for the sixth time in eight games. Tony Armas Jr. (6-5) allowed one run, four hits and struck out four over five innings before leaving the game because of tightness in his shoulder.

Phillies 4, Cubs 3

Philadelphia – Jimmy Rollins scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a passed ball with the bases loaded.

Rollins doubled off Mike Remlinger (0-3) to open the ninth and moved to third on a grounder. The lefty reliever intentionally walked the left-handed hitting Chase Utley and Bobby Abreu to load the bases before he was pulled for Michael Wuertz.

Reds 8, Braves 5

Cincinnati – Adam Dunn drove in five runs with a three-run homer and a two-run double to lead Cincinnati.

Dunn homered off Braves starter Horacio Ramirez (9-7) in the fourth to give the Reds a 4-2 lead. He later knocked a double, too.

Cardinals 9, Marlins 6

St. Louis – Pinch-hitter So Taguchi hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the seventh inning to lead St. Louis, which has won four of five.

David Eckstein had three hits and two RBIs, and Mark Grudzielanek had three hits and an RBI for the Cardinals.

Astros 7, D’backs 0

Phoenix – Morgan Ensberg hit his 28th homer and five pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout for Houston, which won for the 15th time in 17 games.

Ezequiel Astacio (2-4) scattered four hits, walked three and struck out one in five innings.

Russ Springer, Mike Burns, Dan Wheeler and Chad Harville each worked a scoreless inning to close it out.

Rockies 3, Giants 2

San Francisco – Pinch-hitter J.D. Closser singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth, and Colorado won consecutive road games for the first time this season.

Larry Bigbie opened the ninth with a single against Tyler Walker (3-4) and advanced to second when Luis Gonzalez reached on catcher’s interference.
