Chesang wins 5,000 at Penn Relays

Kansas University junior Benson Chesang won the 5,000-meter run at the Penn Relays on Thursday in Philadelphia.

Chesang, who was competing in just his second meet of the outdoor season, beat Martin Fagan of Providence by six seconds. Chesang’s time of 13:57.42 was the fourth fastest all-time by a Jayhawk.

KU sophomore Abby Emsick finished fourth in the shot put after a season-best toss of 45-04.50. Junior Denita Miller placed sixth in the javelin after a throw of 150-09, while senior Jen Widerstrom finished sixth in the hammer after an effort of 45-041/2.

At the Drake Relays on Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa, KU freshman Colby Wissel finished seventh in the 5,000 in a season-best time of 14:15.29.

Sophomore Tyler Kelly and freshman Mike Putzke were 10th and 11th in the 10,000 after times of 30:32.02 and 30:47.21.

The Jayhawk women’s 6,400 relay team of Lauren Brownrigg, Angela Pichardo, Dena Seibel and Megan Manthe placed sixth in 20:10.26.

The Jayhawks will continue at the two meets today and Saturday.
