Texan charged in shooting of Hutchinson officer

? A Texas man who shot a police officer was charged Monday with attempted first-degree murder, possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell and criminal possession of a firearm.

Tracallen W. Streeter, 43, was being held on $1 million bond.

Officer Mike Robinson was shot and wounded after stopping Streeter for a taillight violation Monday morning.

Robinson, hit in the left calf, was released from a hospital after treatment, Police Chief Dick Heitschmidt said. He said that as Robinson approached the car he had stopped about 5:50 a.m., the driver opened fire and sped off.

Heitschmidt said Streeter was initially held for violation of parole in Dallas until charges were filed.

Robinson is expected to be off work for a few weeks, Heitschmidt said.

Authorities said Streeter also attempted to shoot a Reno County deputy who was helping to capture him.

“He pointed the gun and pulled the trigger,” Reno County Dist. Atty. Keith Schroeder said. “The gun jammed.”

Robinson was the first police officer to be shot in Hutchinson in more than 30 years.

The last was Police Capt. Jimmy R. Johnson, who suffered a superficial wound during a robbery at a grocery store in 1974.

A preliminary hearing for Streeter was set for May 19.
