Life Support Rally planned for crisis counseling center

For the second year in a row, Headquarters, a Lawrence nonprofit that has been providing free crisis counseling for 35 years is asking residents to raise funds and awareness for the organization by going for a bicycle ride.

The Life Support Rally bicycle ride will take place Saturday featuring four course lengths for riders of different skill levels. After paying an entry fee or getting sponsorships, participants can take a six-mile, 12-mile or 60-mile ride, all of which start at Sunflower School. There also is a 35-mile long course in commemoration of the organization’s 35 years of providing counseling services.

Headquarters was founded in 1969 by Kansas University students as a drug counseling center, but the organization added services as time passed. Currently, it offers round-the-clock suicide intervention counselors, children’s safety programs and crisis response services.

Melody Carter, the bike ride’s organizer, said the fund-raising goal for the event was $5,000. That’s not a large portion of the organization’s $190,000 annual budget, said Headquarters Director Marcia Epstein, but by raising awareness of the services Headquarters provides, the bicycle ride does innumerable good for the organization.

“If somebody reaches out to the center for help who didn’t know about it before he saw a bike ride poster, you can’t really quantify that,” she said.

Headquarters receives most of its funding from the Douglas County United Way, Lawrence’s alcohol tax program, Kansas University student fees and member donations.
