Suspect charged in Labette County death

A Chetopa man has been charged with killing a woman who disappeared from her rural home early last year.

The investigation by Labette County investigators and other officials led to the arrest Monday of Charles C. Krider, 43, Undersheriff C. W. Davis said. He said Krider was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated burglary and had his bond set at $250,000.

Judith Shrum, 58, a cook at an elementary school, was reported missing from her home southwest of Chetopa on Jan. 19, 2004. Her body was found four days later in a creek bed in neighboring Cherokee County, after an anonymous caller gave a tip to a television station in Joplin, Mo.Davis declined to provide information on the cause of death.
