Hobby evolves into profession for business owner

WAYNE HAUSCHILD, owner of GameDaySigns, makes licensed collegiate logo signs from his company at 701 E. 22nd St.

Wayne Hauschild is one flashy businessman.

Hauschild is founder of GameDaySigns, a Lawrence business that makes programmable, flashing, lighted signs featuring official logos of sports teams. Hauschild began making the signs as a hobby 10 years ago after retiring from the steel industry, but he eventually turned it into a full-time business with help from Kansas University’s Small Business Development Center.

“Without the help and guidance of the SBDC in preparing an effective business plan, we couldn’t have kept the business going in the beginning,” he said.

Hauschild makes the signs in a shop at 701 E. 22nd St. He sells them for $185 with help from an Internet site, www.

gamedaysigns.com, and markets them to tailgaters and rabid fans.

Hauschild said the hardest thing about starting a business was establishing good marketing and distribution channels. He said his best advice for people wanting to start a business is to tackle one problem at a time and stick with it.

“Keep battling the alligators and eventually you’ll come out on top,” he said. “We still have a long, long, long way to go to be considered successful.”
