The Kansas University chapter of Phi Beta Delta, an international honor society dedicated to recognizing scholarly achievement in international education, has announced 21 new undergraduate and graduate student members.

Lawrence students who have been named to the society include: Summer M. Eglinski, Ayako Mizumura, Devdeep Sakar, Malika Cathy, Anne Lyon, Michael L. Brown and Ioannis Zachariou.

Membership eligibility requirements include a 3.25 grade-point average in 30 or more credit hours for undergraduates and 12 hours for graduate students.

Gerry and Kirstin Wiechert Novak announce the birth of their daughter, Ainsley Helen Novak, born on Feb. 28, 2005, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

Maternal grandparents are Allen and Sandra Wiechert, Lawrence. Paternal grandmother is Millie Novak, Milwaukee. Great-grandmother is Serena Wiechert Eastburn, Lawrence.

David and Megan Wiechert Alden announce the birth of their daughter Nadia Rebecca Alden, born on March 22, 2005, in Denver. She has a 2-year-old sister, Alexa Rae Alden.

Maternal grandparents are Allen and Sandra Wiechert, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Howard and Elva Alden, Fort Collins, Colo. Great-grandmother is Serena Wiechert Eastburn, Lawrence.

Emily Schwartz, Lawrence, a senior at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is one of 11 American students who have been given Winston Churchill Scholarships to do advanced studies in science and technology at Churchill College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, England.

Schwartz, a Lawrence High School graduate, was chosen because of her outstanding academic record and performances on the track and field team. A major in aeronautical engineering at MIT, she will do advanced studies in engineering at Cambridge.

Collin Schmidt, a sophomore at Iowa State University in Ames, was honored at a Student Scholars and Leaders Recognition ceremony on April 3. Schmidt, a 2003 Free State High School graduate, ranks in the top 2 percent of his class at ISU and is majoring in finance and accounting.

Marc Connelly, Lawrence, was recognized during the annual School of Business honors banquet April 13 at Emporia State University for earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average. Connelly is a senior studying computer information systems.

There will be a retirement reception for Fran Burkett, Gwen Leckron, Therese Payne and Bonnie Walz. The reception will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. May 6 at Appanoose School in Pomona.

The Lawrence Accredited Music Teachers Assn. will have a recital at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

Students who will be performing include: Karen McCain, Ian Zylstra, Jeremy Woodhead, Patrick Keizer, Andrew Woodhead, Aliza Rosenthal and Addison Frei. They represent the studios of Elaine deSan Miguel, Jean Drumm, Sylvia Frank and Jennifer Hasler.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln recognized Ryan Bodensteiner, Kristen Jordan and Luke Lackrone, all of Lawrence, for their academic achievements on April 17 during an honors convocation at the university.

Bodensteiner, a freshman in arts and sciences, has earned a cumulative grade-point average of 4.0. Jordan and Lackrone, both seniors in arts and sciences, have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.6.

Ian Adkins, Lawrence, made the dean’s list for the 2004 fall semester at Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Ind., by earning at least a 3.5 grade-point average. Adkins, a Free State High School graduate, is a freshman majoring in music education in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Lawrence school district competed in the 2005 Supernationals III chess tournament April 8-10 in Nashville, Tenn.

Quail Run School’s team of Keil Eggers, Alan Shi, Austin Clapp and Harrison Helmick placed 14th in the K-6 Championship. Quail Run’s team of Andrei Elliott, Cole Reams and Caleb Borovik placed 21st in the K-8 Under 750 Division. Individual awards went to the following players: Alan Shi took first place in the Under 1,200 Class, and Rozie Jordan took 25th place in the K-6 Unrated Division.

From Southwest Junior High School, the team of Thomas Clark, Thomas Reams, Keely Stenseng and Sean Stenseng placed 12th in the K-12 Under 1,500 Division. Seventh-grader Jed Borovik placed 13th in the K-8 Championship Division.
