Slump prompts rotation shakeup

After the season’s most miserable and frustrating weekend series, Kansas University baseball coach Ritch Price has shaken up his pitching rotation.

Senior southpaw Mike Zagurski, normally the Jayhawks’ starter in the first game of a three-game weekend Big 12 Conference series, will hurl tonight against Wichita State and again Sunday at Texas Tech.

Meanwhile, right-hander Kodiak Quick (8-4, 3.83 earned-run average), who has been starting the Sunday league games, will become the Friday starter against the Red Raiders.

Zagurski (4-4, 4.69 ERA) will be on a 60-pitch limit against the Shockers. Game time will be 7 p.m. at Hoglund Ballpark.

Price’s mound moves come on the heels of Baylor’s sweep last weekend at Hoglund Ballpark. The three losses dropped Kansas (24-18 overall, 3-9 Big 12) into the conference cellar.

Tonight’s meeting is the third of four between KU and WSU this spring. Kansas thumped the Shockers, 13-6, two weeks ago at Hoglund, but WSU toppled the Jayhawks, 5-1, Wednesday in Wichita as Mike Pelfrey tossed a five-hitter.

The Jayhawks have been in a hitting slump since. In the Baylor series, KU managed only 15 hits and scored just eight runs. KU’s team batting average has slipped to .294. The Jayhawks also lead the league in striking out.

“We’ve lost our last four in a row,” KU catcher Sean Richardson said. “We have got to come out against Wichita State and just compete and battle. We have to come out pretty pumped.”

Kansas also needs to improve its fielding. Third baseman Erik Morrison, shortstop Ritchie Price and second baseman Ryne Price have accounted for 42 of the Jayhawks’ league-high 73 errors. KU also is next-to-last in the Big 12 in turning double plays.

On a more positive note, outfielder Matt Baty continues to lead the Big 12 in steals with 20. He has been caught stealing just five times. Also, Zagurski ranks second in the league with 74 strikeouts.
