Domino’s manager in ‘fastest pizza’ contest

Casey Myers can prepare three pizzas in 67 seconds.

And he’s aiming to beat that time.

Myers, general manager of Domino’s Pizza in Lawrence, is off to Chicago this week to compete in the semifinals of the Domino’s World’s Fastest Pizza Maker Contest.

Myers is one of 74 qualifers who will slap dough, add sauce, spread cheese and add toppings to three pies Thursday in Chicago, for a shot at making it to Miami for the finals in June.

The finals field will include winners of each of the seven semifinals, plus three “wild cards.” Judges watch as makers put together three pizzas, then tell them what is wrong; the clock stops once corrections are made.

The fastest time so far: 58 seconds. Myers’ best is 9 seconds behind.

“I’m just happy to be representing our local Domino’s Pizza,” said Casey, who has worked for Domino’s in Texas and metro Kansas City for 13 years. “I think I’ve got a very good shot. I’m confident.”

Canadian ‘lottery’ targets area elderly

Phone calls and mailings offering large sums of “sweepstakes” winnings are making their way from Canada to senior citizens in northeast Kansas, the Better Business Bureau reported this week.

Don’t fall for it, said Joyce Woodard, the bureau’s president for northeast Kansas.

“International lotteries are against the law,” Woodard said. “As soon as a consumer hears or sees (the) words, ‘International Lottery,’ destroy the mail or hang up on the caller.”

The Canadian scammers promise to deliver money to consumers who agree to pay $29.95. The consumers lose the $29.95, Woodard said, plus more money after giving the scammers access to their checking account numbers or credit union names.

Mint to produce first 24-karat gold coin

The U.S. Mint announced on Tuesday it would begin producing a new 24-karat gold bullion coin early next year, hoping to capitalize on growing international demand for purer gold coins.

The Mint already produces the 22-karat American Eagle gold bullion coin, and Mint officials estimate the potential global market for 24-karat gold coins at $2.4 billion annually.

This will mark the first time the U.S. Mint has produced a 24-karat gold coin.
