No. 8 Bears capitalize on bevy of Jayhawk gaffes

Destiny Frankenstein had a monster game — a career-high four hits, including a pair of doubles — and Kansas University’s softball team out-hit Baylor, 11-6.

Final score: Baylor 8, Kansas 5.

“It’s frustrating,” said Frankenstein, a junior shortstop. “But that’s the way the game is. We have to improve our base-running and our fielding.”

Four base-running gaffes and three errors cost the Jayhawks dearly against the No. 8-ranked Bears on Sunday at Arrocha Ballpark.

KU coach Tracy Bunge particularly was dismayed by the shoddy base-running — mental errors that included being picked off, trying to score on a short overthrow at third and passing a runner on the base paths.

“It’s just not being smart on the bases,” Bunge said. “When you’re down 6-1, you have to look at things differently. Hopefully, we’ll learn from it.”

Kansas fell into an early 6-1 hole mainly because sophomore right-hander Kassie Humphreys continued to struggle. After an impressive freshman season, Humphreys hasn’t been able to find home plate this spring.

“She’s not throwing with the same velocity,” Bunge said. “And she’s walked about a batter an inning, and that’s killing her.”

Humphreys lasted only 2 2/3 innings, surrendered five hits and walked four without registering a strikeout.

Kansas University softball players Cyndi Duran, left, Ashley Goodrich, center, and Christina Ross watch KU's loss to Baylor. The Jayhawks fell, 8-5, Sunday at Arrocha Ballpark.

Serena Settlemier allowed only one hit and no walks in 41/3 innings of relief.

Kansas had dropped a heartbreaking 8-7 eight-inning decision to the Bears, now 39-7 overall and 7-4 in the Big 12, Conference Saturday afternoon.

In the two games against Baylor, Kansas scored 12 runs and pounded 19 hits — normally more than enough to sweep — yet fell to 19-18 overall and 2-7 in the conference.

“Offensively, I’m really pleased what we’re doing,” Bunge said. “Last year, I dreamed for that.”

Last year’s club compiled a team batting average of .208, the lowest in school history, but this year’s team BA is up to a respectable .266.

Frankenstein, who hit .263 last season, boosted her team-high batting average to a glossy .359, but she was one of the Jayhawks who made a baserunning error Sunday.

“I think we were trying to be overly aggressive,” Frankenstein said. “We’re all trying to pick each other up, but there’s no excuse for it.”

Kansas University second baseman Jessica Moppin throws to first base for an out against Baylor. The Jayhawks lost to the Bears, 8-5, Sunday at Arrocha Ballpark.

Or for the three physical errors that led to a pair of unearned runs.

“Defensively, we’re not making plays when we should be,” Bunge said.

Kansas has a busy schedule this week. The Jayhawks will travel Wednesday to Lincoln, Neb., for a night game against Nebraska, then bus Thursday to Omaha, Neb., for an afternoon twinbill with Creighton.
