Glass in 18th place at Empire Open

? Bob Glass of Lawrence was in 18th place after Sunday’s first round of the Empire State Open, the first event on the PBA Senior Tour.

Glass, the reigning PBA Senior player of the year, rolled 1,809 in the first eight-game qualifying round. Tour rookie Tom Baker of Buffalo, N.Y., was the first-round leader with a 1,957.

All 145 bowlers will return today for an additional eight games of qualifying. The field then will be cut to the top one-third who will bowl nine more games of qualifying Tuesday.

The top 32 will advance to match play, with the top eight receiving a bye into the round of eight. The top four will bowl best-of-three match play for the $8,000 top prize Wednesday.
